About Helping Hands Inc.

Our mission is to provide a safe, pleasurable, sociable, educational and stimulating program experience for the mentally and physically disabled individuals we serve.

Helping Hands, Inc. offers programs to persons with intellectual disabilities who are mentally and physically challenged. Our programs are designed around each individual’s needs and implemented in the least restrictive environment for the safety and well being of the individual.

Our goal is to maximize the person’s skills and abilities to his or her fullest potential in order to prepare and assist them for living within their community. Our programs encourage individuals to grow in self-assurance and respect while enjoying their rehabilitations, residential, vocational and recreational experiences.

For over thirty years, Helping Hands has been providing support services for individuals and families impacted by physical and intellectual disabilities. Because we are a small agency, we take pride in our ability to pay attention to the individual needs of each of our clients and in developing a partnership with families, providers, vendors, funding sources and our community.

No person evaluated and found capable of benefiting from our vocational, social or recreational programs is ever turned away because of race, color, creed, national origin, political affiliation, sex or handicap.

Helping Hands Agency History

Helping Hands started in 1976 as a support group for parents of developmentally disabled children. Due to the lack of services in the area, these parents joined together and provided a Summer Camp Program for 20 of their own children.

Two camp sessions later, in 1978, Helping Hands became official. It is incorporated as a private, nonprofit agency and received tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service. Both events occurred because of increased interest and need to provide programs for handicapped individuals in the Upper Montgomery County area.

1978 also saw the beginning of the agency’s Adult Socialization Recreation Program, which provides opportunities to developmentally disabled adults to participate in integrated community recreational activities by attending local events like Philadelphia Phillies games, dinner shows and museums. Consumers broaden their experiences and acquire improved social skills and behaviors. By attending the program, each Consumer improves the skills necessary to function in the community at large.

In July of 1983, due to a pressing need in the area for vocational rehabilitation of developmentally disabled adults, Helping Hands, Inc. started its Training and Industrial Enterprise Program. This program provides instruction to severely and moderately disabled adults in pre-job and job skills. The goal for each individual is for him or her to reach their maximum vocational potential and hopefully attain an independent job in the community.

In February of 1998, in response to the growing concern of the aging of individuals with developmental disabilities, we opened a new licensed Aging Program to provide services for those individuals over the age of 60. This program is available for non-handicapped adults as well as those with developmental disabilities.

In July 1999 we expanded our menu of services by having Macoby Creek Center, Inc join Helping Hands. Macoby Creek Center is our first step into providing residential services in our community. In June 2000 we opened Hanover Square, our second home, in April 2002, our third home, Charlotte Corner, in November 2005, Serenity Drive became our fourth home and in 2010, we opened our fifth home, Maugers Mill. In 2017, we added Rambler Avenue as our sixth home.

Helping Hands provides services to over 300 developmentally disabled persons and their family members.

Our continuing mission is to develop and provide quality programs to meet the special needs of the handicapped individuals within our community service area.

Fees

The agency’s Sheltered Workshop (WAC), Adult Daycare Program (ATF), and Residential Community Homes, are funded primarily through a combination of state and federal monies. Rates for reimbursement are set by the PA Office of Developmental Programs.

Fees for our Social and Recreation Program (S/R) are private pay and subsidized by our United Way support and agency fundraising activity. Our S/R Program activity costs generally range from $10-$50 per event. The Summer Vacation Program fees are established annually based on budgetary consideration.

Contact the office for current weekly rates. In addition, qualified individuals and families may qualify for funding support through the state and federal waiver program. Individuals and families should contact their supports coordinator for more information.

Special Needs Trust

Helping Hands Special Needs Pooled Trust allows people with disabilities to set aside funds for extra, quality-of-life needs without jeopardizing Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and Medicaid benefits or services.
